Over the last three decades, the need for a tightly integrated approach to planning, development and implementation, has been recognized by both the public and private sectors. Organized in 1984, to address these increasingly complex requirements of both government and the private business community, SMDI CONSULTANTS, INC. has developed its strengths in the fields of transportation and traffic engineering, comprehensive development planning, urban development, water resources, and environmental systems. Today, SMDI is an established and dynamic consultancy firm that has a string of major accomplishments in a number of technical fields, backed by its pool of professional planners, engineers and architects, environmental planners, computer systems and traffic simulation specialists.
SMDI is an active member of the Council of Engineering Consultants of the Philippines (CECOPHIL). Through its affiliation and close association with its local and global network of consultancy firms from the Philippines, Japan, U.S.A, U.K. and Germany, SMDI has participated in a number of major government and private sector projects. Its government projects have been generally funded by the Philippine government, in cooperation with leading international organizations and lending institutions, particularly the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), the International Engineering Consulting Firms Association (IECA), the International Association of Traffic & Safety Sciences (IATSS), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank. Its private sector projects consist of major developments of land developers, healthcare and educational institutions and commercial/industrial corporations, such as as Ayala Land, Inc., Belle Corporation, Eton Properties, Inc., Federal Land, Inc., Fil-estate, Filinvest, Geoestate Solutions, Inc., Landco, Ortigas & Company Ltd. Partnership, PhilRealty Holdings, Inc., Robinsons Land Corporation, Rockwell Land Corporation, SM Development Corporation, SM Investments Corporation, Sta. Lucia Realty, Walter Mart, St. Luke's Medical Center, UST Hospital, Ateneo de Manila University, Assumption College and Carmelray.
Over the years, SMDI has compiled a broad and wide ranging "track record" in the very specialized fields of transportation and traffic, and regional and urban planning. These include the development of comprehensive traffic/transportation data base and planning methodologies, training of technical personnel and conduct of various specialized studies for roads, railways, ports, airports, public transportation (LRT/jeepneys/buses), and urban/rural/regional development projects, including their respective infrastructure and utilities. In 1990, the company expanded its services to include water resources and environmental systems. Principally, SMDI focuses on planning and research, systems development and project management/coordination, in all its major fields of activity.
In 1999, SMDI became the sole distributor in the Philippines of ptv vision software products developed and marketed by PTV Planung Transport Verkehr AG of Germany. ptv vision is a very useful and user-friendly tool for the evaluation of various alternatives based on transportation engineering and planning measures of effectiveness. It is the world's leading transportation planning and traffic simulation model, consisting of a range of softwares, which include, among others:
VISSIM Simulation Sample
- VISUM: the strategic modelling and transportation planning software on a macroscopic level;
- VISSIM: the micro-simulation modelling software used to simulate traffic conditions; and
- Pedestrian Modelling Module, within VISSIM, which is an enhanced pedestrian modelling tool recently added to the VISSIM software.
PTV vision is currently used by over 2000 organizations in more than 90 countries worldwide, including the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Department of Public Works & Highways/Project Management Office-Traffic Engineering and Management (DPWH/PMO-TEAM) in the Philippines.
PTV vision in the Philippines is supported by the Asia-Pacific operations, with offices in Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia, with Singapore as its regional headquarters.
As can be gleaned from its list of projects, SMDI specializes on traffic engineering and planning studies which have come up with sound traffic management plans addressing the following concerns: traffic management and control facilities, traffic signals, parking facilities and operations, traffic circulation and access, geometric improvements of road sections and intersections, pedestrian demand and facilities, public transport loading/unloading facilities, intermodal linkages, parking demand and facilities, and others.
